How I learned to stick to & achieve my goals in 90 days

About 90 days ago, my coach suggested I create a calendar management system to prioritize and structure my business goals. I reluctantly agreed. When I heard the word structure, I felt confined and restricted to a set of parameters. I prefer to have flexibility and freedom over structure.

But my coach challenged my definition of structure. She helped me to create a new definition around what it meant to have structure. I began to see it as something that does not have to be restricting but absolutely necessary when it comes to being productive. I learned to see structure as less rigid and more expansive.  Structure doesn't have to feel confining and limiting. You can have both freedom and flexibility while operating within a structure. Structure and flexibility can coexist. Eureka!

So, I got to work organizing my calendar, looping my day-to-day activities into time blocks and prioritizing my goals. I completed the 90 days just last week and here’s what happened:

  • I met my goal of doing at least 1 speaking event a month
  • I met my writing goal to get 1 blog post out a week
  • I met my networking goal of meeting with business contacts and clients
  • I met my goal of launching The Momentum Club on the targeted date
  • I met my self-care/fun goal of getting manicures every 2 weeks and going for mind-clearing walks 20 minutes a day (Jax, my pup helps me with this)

However, I didn’t meet my goal of 2 new clients but I understood this might happen when I raised my prices. Comes with the territory. 

This experience helped me to visualize and clarify my bigger goals so that I could break it down into weekly tasks. Doing this creates more focus with how you use your time rather than spending it haphazardly.  90 days (or 3 months) is a period of time that is not too spread out but is manageable enough so that you can see the results of your work in a relatively short period of time.

After 90 days you can look back on how you used your time and feel a sense of accomplishment and clearly see what areas need tweaking.

Going through the process of identifying your 90-day goal and creating work tasks that align with the goals helps to solidify your commitment. Putting it on your calendar makes you more likely to stick to it while leaving room for adjustments where necessary. 

Here’s how you can create an calendar management system for your career goals:

  1. Identify 3 goals that you can accomplish within 90 day goals and create categories on your calendar. Make sure goal is specific & attainable. For example, Goal: Meet & connect with 10 professional likeminded women, Calendar Category: Networking    
  2. Identify # of hours a week you want to work on that goal and map it out in your calendar. For example, 2 hours a week at networking event or 1-on-1 coffee meetings on Monday’s & Wednesdays
  3. Create a schedule that feels good for you and commit to it for 90 days
  4. At the end of 90 days, check progress, adjust as needed. Continue or create new 90-day goals.

Remember, don’t be intimidated by the words “calendar management system” like me.  If it feels too much like structure, it probably is, but remember that structure, flexibility, and freedom can all coexist. If you tend to lean too far into the free and flexible side, learn to bring a little more structure into your day. And likewise if you lean too far into being a too structured, learn to incorporate a little flexibility from time to time.

Create a balance that works for you and start kicking those goals into gear!
