Portraits for a Cause

I am literally sitting here in my living room with the tv on news channel 4 listening to the updates since Hurricane Sandy this past Monday. Even my boyfriend (who’s working from home while his office tries to restore power) just turned to me and said “I feel like every day the reports get worse and worse about the devastation of this storm”.

I agree.

Not beyond my wildest dreams did I imagine the storm would do so much destruction. On Monday evening I sat here in my Queens apartment listening to the whirling winds outside without even a clue of the destruction it was wreaking in Manhattan, parts of the Jersey shore, and even worse Staten Island.  Days later since the storm, the reports keep coming in about storm related deaths and those people who are without homes left stunned wondering how to pick up the pieces of their lives.

I recognize how incredibly fortunate I am to be sitting here with working electricity, food in the refrigerator, and a warm bed to lay in at night.  I recognize how many people out there aren’t as lucky.

I watch the news as reporters interview homeowners standing in front of rubble of what used to be their home. Soaken teddy bears and broken picture frames laying on the ground covered in mud.

Part of me feels so helpless. I can’t even imagine the despair they must be going through. So I started researching volunteer centers and evacuation shelters that could possibly use my help to start rebuilding and help uplift others to move forward through this. I scanned my heart for the answers that felt good to my soul. And then I realized how I'd like to help.

For the next week every portrait or headshot session you book with me, I will be donating a portion of the sale to the Red Cross in support of Hurricane Sandy victims.

Here is the breakdown:
  • Portrait Sessions @ $450, 20% to Red Cross..................$90 goes to Red Cross
  • Headshot Sessions @ $175, 15%  to Red Cross..........$26.25 goes to Red Cross

It doesn’t seem like much but at least 5 portrait sessions could mean a $450 donation to the Red Cross. Every little bit helps.

November marks the month of gratitude and I have so much to be thankful for. Hurricane Sandy helped me to realize that.

30 Days of Gratitude | A Journey...

Expressing gratitude has become a forgotten act where life for a lot of us, myself included, has become a race to just get through the day.  It is the in between moments when we’re racing from one thing to the next that cause us to miss out on the things that truly bring us happiness.

Sweet Abundance

I met with a dear friend of mine yesterday at Martha’s Bakery in Forest Hills.  On my way to meeting my friend I couldn’t help but think about the history of our friendship.  I met her when I first started on my path to becoming a photographer.  Her boyfriend, now her husband, led these photography meet up groups that I attended regularly.  That was about four years ago and I never would’ve known at the time that our friendship would grow into what it is today.

I experienced a sweet feeling of gratitude for the friendships and the people I have in my life right now.  A treasure that I’ve always had but it went unnoticed for a long time until now.  It’s like reaching your hands into your pockets and pulling out a crisp twenty dollar bill that you didn’t know you had. Our lives are rich with abundance that we’ve created for ourselves over the years.  When changes take place in our lives it sometimes clouds our ability to see the treasures that exist in our lives.  But the beauty is that it is always there waiting for you to find it.

Reach into the pockets of your life.  What treasures will you find…?

Happy Thanksgiving to you all!

30 Days of Gratitude Starts Today!

I’m so excited for this month for two reasons!

Number 1; Countdown to Turkey Day!!  I can smell the sweet goodness of candied yams and egg nog already!  >>insert Homer Simpson drool<<

And Number 2; we’re celebrating 30 days of Gratitude starting today, November 1st!! Join us by taking one picture a day of something you are grateful for!

  • While you’re sitting in a cafe, take quick shot of that pumpkin spice latte you’re sipping.
  • Or you could snap a photo the beautiful Fall leaves on your way to work.
  • And one of my favorite’s, take a self-portrait; a beautiful way to express love and gratitude towards yourself.

You don’t need a fancy camera to do this! The camera on your phone, film, or small point-and-shoot camera will do just fine.

Come on over to share a few of your gratitude photos this month on my fanpage!  Just post and tag the image with your name and myself: "Ariane Hunter Photography" so we can see your beautiful photos!  I just may feature your photo on the blog next month to inspire others to start their own gratitude practice!

So…what are you grateful for?!!

Artist, Tracey Chan | See Beauty...™ Friday Feature

Today I woke up and I was facing the window side of the room. The light streamed gently down the wall from under bamboo blinds in a peaceful gradient; light to darkness. The sun was blazing outside, but the graceful sunshine filtered dreamily. With groggy eyes, I lay there for a while thinking about how gorgeous that small vignette was, and being grateful that I could see it. And this is my life; made up of these little beautiful moments in the simple things.

Just For A Moment

I’m sitting in a café feeling totally at ease and inspired to the core.  It could be the tall glass of Balance tea I just finished drinking.  But something tells me it’s a bit more than that.  As I look around me I see that I am surrounded by life and vitality that creates this beautiful experience that is the human connection.  I notice the golden sunlight that is filtering in through the stain-glassed windows reflecting onto the wooden table tops. I observe as people  from different walks of life, all with their own personal story are gathered here in the same café at the same moment in time.

Just maybe, this was the case for all of those who were at the World Trade Center on Tuesday morning, September 11, ten years ago.  Gathered together at the same location at the same moment in time. Whenever I am reminded of the tragic events on that day, I can only imagine the horror from everyone that was directly affected.  The love that was lost and everything they’d ever come to know came to an abrupt ending.

It seems unfathomable how this tragic event was brought on by such evil and hate.  How is it possible for one person to inspire this kind of toxic negativity that would ultimately lead to the death of so many people?  It is sad and heartbreaking to say the least.  It only goes to show you what we as humans are capable of when we use our powers for the opposite of Good.

Each and every day we are fortunate to wake up in the morning, breathe air into our lungs and get out of bed assuming that the ground will be there underneath our feet.  The day unfolds as it may, and we go along not knowing what the next moment will bring.  All we have is the present moment we’re in; it’s all we know for sure.  Our joy, love, anger, fear, passion, and beauty remind us of what it feels like to be alive.  We may notice these feelings within us, acknowledge them, and become connected with them.  Or we may experience them as fleeting moments just simply passing through. The choice is up to us.

So while I sit in this café soaking in all the sights and sounds of life happening all around me, I am reminded of how precious this moment is.  To feel at ease and inspired about the experience going on around me right now, I am reminded what it feels like to be alive.
